Components of Maintenance Free Car Battery
Positive and Negative Plates
These are the heart of the battery, made from lead or lead alloys. The positive plates are coated with lead dioxide (PbO2), while the negative plates are coated with spongy lead. These plates are stacked inside the battery case and separated by separators.
Electrolyte
The electrolyte is a sulfuric acid solution that reacts with the lead plates to produce electrical energy. In a maintenance-free battery, the electrolyte is absorbed by a special separator material called a gel or an absorbed glass mat (AGM). This design eliminates the need for regular topping off with water.
Separator
The separator is a porous material that separates the positive and negative plates, preventing short-circuiting. In a maintenance-free battery, the separator is typically made from a fiberglass mat that has been impregnated with the electrolyte.
Battery Case and Cover
The battery case and cover are typically made from plastic or polypropylene, providing strength and durability while also being leak-proof.
Vents and Safety Valves
Maintenance-free batteries are equipped with vents and safety valves that allow the release of gases produced during charging and discharging, while preventing the ingress of external contaminants.
Terminals and Posts
The terminals or posts are the connections where the cables attach to the battery for charging and discharging. They are usually made from lead or a lead alloy and are corrosion-resistant.

Charging A Maintenance Free Car Battery
Charging a maintenance-free car battery is a straightforward process, but it's important to follow the correct steps to ensure safe and efficient charging. Here's a step-by-step guide:
Safety First
Before starting the charging process, make sure to wear protective gloves and goggles to protect yourself from any potential hazards.
Choose the Right Charger
Select a charger that is compatible with maintenance-free batteries. It should have a voltage output and charging current suitable for your battery.
Connect the Charger
Connect the positive (+) charger clamp to the positive terminal of the battery and the negative (-) charger clamp to the negative terminal. Ensure a secure connection.
Set the Charging Parameters

Start the Charging Process
Turn on the charger and let it charge the battery according to the manufacturer's instructions. The charging time may vary depending on the battery's capacity and the charger's specifications.
Monitor the Charging
Keep an eye on the charger and battery during the charging process. If you notice any unusual behavior, such as excessive heat or smoke, stop the charging immediately and seek professional assistance.
Complete the Charging
Once the battery is fully charged, turn off the charger and disconnect the clamps from the battery terminals. Double-check the connections to ensure they are secure.
Are Maintenance Free Car Batteries Really Maintenance Free?
The idea of the maintenance free car battery was to provide car owners with a battery that could be used with less worry and hassle than their predecessors. Older car battery models were made with removable caps on the top of the battery to allow inspection and electrolyte testing, as well as the occasional addition of distilled water or sulfuric acid. Since any of these procedures could be hazardous for the average driver, manufacturers began to produce batteries that did not require such maintenance.
Whatever type of battery you currently own, there are some things you should do when it comes to your battery. For one, the cleanliness of the battery is important. Even though a maintenance free battery is completely sealed, some electrolyte residue can be discharged and deposited on the outside of the battery. Take the time every few months to carefully brush off the residue with a soft bristled brush.Battery cleaning kits are available at your local automotive supply store and come with a brush. If you would prefer, use a general service visit to ask the mechanic to wipe off this residue.
The car battery's terminals should be occasionally cleaned as well. Carefully remove the cables to the terminals as directed in your car owner's manual. Remember, a car battery carries a large amount of current, so disconnecting the battery should only be performed by a qualified mechanic if you are uncertain as to your ability to do so. The terminals may have corrosive build-up and will need a stiff wire brush or terminal brush to clean them. Do the same for the ends of the battery cables.
Have your battery tested yearly by a qualified mechanic. If the battery is low on charge, try using a multi-stage car battery charger to bring the battery's charge back to a normal range. In some cases, allowing a good overnight charge will help greatly in bringing your battery back to peak performance levels. With today's types of alternators, some will not fully charge a battery that is slowly going flat. Allowing the slow charge of a multi-stage charger will help improve your battery's performance while keeping your alternator from overworking.
The Difference Between Maintenance Free Car Battery and Ordinary Battery
Different life spans
Maintenance-free car batteries Due to their structural advantages, the consumption of electrolyte is very small, and it is basically unnecessary to replenish distilled water during the service life. It also has the characteristics of shock resistance, high temperature resistance, small size and small self-discharge. The service life is generally twice that of a normal battery.
Different materials
Traditional batteries are made of lead-bismuth alloy, and maintenance-free car batteries are made of lead-calcium alloy. The former uses bismuth and the latter uses calcium, which is the fundamental difference between the two.
The phenomenon is different
Different materials will produce different phenomena: the traditional battery will reduce the liquid during use, because the flaw on the grid will contaminate the sponge-like pure lead on the negative plate, which will reduce the reverse of the battery after full charge. Electromotive force causes excessive decomposition of water.
A large amount of oxygen and hydrogen escape from the positive and negative plates, respectively, reducing the electrolyte. By replacing the strontium with calcium, it is possible to change the back electromotive force of the fully charged battery, reduce the overcharge current, and reduce the liquid vaporization speed, thereby reducing the electrolyte loss.
Different functions
Compared with the traditional battery, the maintenance-free car battery does not need to add any liquid, has less corrosion to the wiring pile head and wires, strong anti-overcharge capability, large starting current, and long storage time.
How Maintenance Free Car Batteries Work
When the battery is being charged, an external power source supplies direct current (DC) to the battery. This current passes through the battery's positive and negative terminals, causing a chemical reaction between the lead plates and the electrolyte. The positive plate attracts sulfate ions from the electrolyte, forming lead sulfate, while the negative plate releases hydrogen gas and forms lead.
When the battery is discharging, the chemical reaction reverses. The lead sulfate on the positive plate breaks down, releasing sulfate ions back into the electrolyte. At the same time, the lead on the negative plate reacts with the sulfate ions from the electrolyte, producing lead sulfate and hydrogen gas. This reaction releases electrical energy, which powers the vehicle's electrical systems.
In a sealed lead-acid battery, the generated hydrogen gas combines with the oxygen gas present in the battery case to form water. This water is then absorbed back into the electrolyte, maintaining the correct level of electrolyte without the need for regular topping off.
The sealed design of the maintenance-free battery prevents leakage of the electrolyte. The battery case and cover are made from leak-proof materials, and the vents and safety valves allow the release of gases produced during charging and discharging while preventing the ingress of external contaminants.
How to Add Distilled Water into Maintenance Free (MF) Car Battery
1. Locate the Maintenance Free (MF) battery under the car hood.
2. Locate and unlock the distilled connector cover on the maintenance free battery. For my maintenance free battery cover, I unlock it with 10 sen coin. For maintenance free car battery, usually there is only one cover to pour the distilled water into the battery.
3. Loosen up the maintenance free battery cover.
Pour the distilled water into the maintenance free battery.
Close and tighten back the cover and you are done.
Conclusion: Especially in places with consistent or all year round hot climate (tropical weather or desert areas), the ‘maintenance free’ battery will not achieve it’s full life span and will fail prematurely. Adding distilled water is still required for maintenance free battery in order to optimize its life span.
Tip: Though using ‘maintenance free’ batteries maybe convenient, but it’s definitely not as economical as a normal car battery as it tends to fail earlier. So be a little hard-working and use a normal car battery which requires refilling of the water.
